Our Process

When you hire J.E. Shannon & Associates for Web Design and/or Marketing Services, here is what to expect:

  1. Review Our Web Design and Marketing Services Pages at J.E. Shannon & Associates: To review all of the Web Design/Development/Marketing  Products and Services, we provide to get your web presence ideas into reality.JESAonline brings you all the peices of the pie
  2. Fill out the New Client Design Profile: This profile will ask a set of questions about your branding, your intended audience, your goals for your web site, etc. Your answers will help us tailor the web design and development to your specific needs, and estimate the time and cost of doing so. Adrianna or James Shannon will call you to discuss the details of the project and to schedule the start and end times of your web design project.
  3. Confirm your Acceptance: Once you have sent-in the New Web Design Client Profile and have agreed to the details and schedule of your web design or marketing project with Adrianna or James Shannon. J.E. Shannon & Associates will regard this as an “Acceptance” of our services. We will not assume your consent, so you must confirm it before we start working on your project. 
  4. Pay the initial invoice (at times, the first-half of the project cost): This covers the work done on consultation phase and the mock-ups and is payable even if you decide not to use any of the proposed designs after all.
  5. Send any relevant materials: if you have an existing logo or branding guidelines, or if you are supplying photos or text to be included, please send them as follows: If possible, we prefer to receive any resources and instructions in electronic format, sent by email or made available by download from a website. If in PDF, please ensure it is editable and not locked. If you are not able to provide an electronic copy of your resources, please send the hard copy to our mailing address and email us a short message alerting us to expect the postal mail. This will lengthen the time it will take to finish your project and can be subject to additional fees. (See our Contact page for our email and mailing address) 
  6. Review the initial mock-ups: Adrianna will submit one or several proposed designs in a link for your approval. Now is the time to ask for adjustments. Major time-consuming revisions may necessitate additional costs, while minor tweaks and adjustments will not affect the original cost estimate. She will only provide a maximum of 3 mock-ups/edits before considering additional cost to your project.
  7. Approve the finalized version: Once you are satisfied with the entire design of the site, Adrianna or James Shannon will finalize the design and upload, deliver it in the file formats needed, or make the site “live” for the general online public to view.
  8. Pay all subsequent invoices (sometimes, the second half of the project cost): Depending on the scope of your project, one or two payments may be sufficient. If the project is more involved and time-consuming, though, we may bill you for work done on a monthly basis or on a schedule that we have negotiated together. 
  9. Market Your Site: Utilize our in-house online marketing skills to help you receiving visitors to your new site via Search Engine Marketing, Social Networking and Local Organic Targeting.

Meeting Your Deadline

The amount of time it takes to complete a web design project depends on the a few factors:
We will meet your deadline at all cost!

  • The complexity of the design,
  • The availability of quality, web compliant content,
  • Our existing workload,
  • The amount of time to thoroughly test the site for quality assurance.

The deadline is reasonable if it allows our designer, Adrianna, to work at a pace up to 8 hours a day, keeping in mind that creative work involves some research, experimentation and proper quality control time, not just steady execution.

Faster work can sometimes be negotiated, depending on the circumstances and her existing workload. However, it is best to allow for as much notice as possible just in case her workload cannot accommodate immediate full dedication to the new project.

Please be ready to set a deadline on your New Client Design Profile that is reasonable and fair. Now, let's talk the dollars and cents of your web design project.

Cost of Web Design

Time is moneyWhen considering the project cost of web design, it is dependent on a number of factors:

  • What Kind of Web Site is Needed? (blog, e-commerce, membership site, etc.)
  • How Much Complexity and Specialization Involved?
  • How Much Interactivity Features are to be Included? (video, forms, restricted access, chat, uploads, etc.)
  • Whether You Will Provide Content such as Photos or Text or will it need to be sought out?
  • Whether Resources such as Photos need to be transferred from hard copy to electronic format?
  • When will the deadline be? Short notice may require that the Adrianna to work overtime hours, entailing a higher rate.
  • The Overall Value of the Design in terms of Branding and Originality

Cost and time estimates for each project are different and Adrianna will need to see the details of your request before she can evaluate the complexity and other factors that affect price and schedule accordingly. However, the following examples will give you a “rough” initial estimate of cost of your web design project (in U.S.  dollars;  domain and web hosting is extra):

  • $500 to 700: setting up a blog site (such as WordPress or Drupal) with an existing theme, modifying it as needed to add your branding with images that you provide (i.e. your logo, photographs) and configuring it with recommended widgets and plugins; client to  create content pages and posts.
  • $750 to $2,000: custom designed layout and look including light graphic design; 3 to 5 articles, copywriting and content with search engine optimization and marketing in mind; moderate amount of interactivity or e-commerce.
  • $2,000+: Same as above but with more interactivity or e-commerce, copy and content creation, graphics creation, elaborate design.

Why We Charge What We Do

Customers have a right to know that billing rates are not arbitrary. Below is a detailed breakdown and explanation of each part of the billing rate that clients pay for hiring the skill and talent available through your Consultant.

  • Base Pay: If you were to hire a permanent Web CMS Designer/Developer to work for you for a total of 40 hours x 4 weeks x 10 months you would have to pay an average annual salary of $110,000. Note: Holidays, vacations, training-days, sick-days, personal days etc will account for up to 8 weeks every year - hence the excluded 8 weeks. You can check Salary.com, poll employers/HR or your favorite resource for current salary figures. These rates, of course, do not include the cost of benefits, office-space, communication, and other facilities necessary for work.
  • Operating Costs: Beyond the base pay, mentioned above, facilities are necessary to keep the office operational to realize the scope of your project. These include: Project Management tools, office space, telephone, Internet access, Computer Equipment, Software, etc - adds up to $15,917.25 per annum (2010 figures)
  • Benefits: The cost of providing healthcare, insurance, and other necessary benefits - adds up to $17,690 per-annum for 2011.
    Business Stability & Profit: Businesses need to make profits so as to create an operating reserve and grow in the marketplace, this figure is set at 25% of the total figure from the above costs.

Calculation

Now, let's do the math :) Add all the numbers and divide the sum by 1600 hours a year (10 months x 4 weeks x 40 hours):

  1. Healthcare costs: $17,690
  2. Operating costs: $15,917.25
  3. Base Salary: 110,000 per annum
  4. Sub-total (add 1, 2 & 3): 143,607.25

Grand Total: Business Stability + Profit + Flexibility: 25% = 179,509.06 for 1600 work-hours/yr results in an hourly rate of $112.19. Of course, overtime, unscheduled and ad-hoc emergency work will attract a higher hourly rate.

So, in conclusion, you can easily see how your company can realize cost savings by contracting with J.E. Shannon & Associates vs. paying for a regular, full time employee.
